Sail the Caribbean in Style!

Traveling to BVI

Great! So you've made your reservations, bought your tickets, blocked out your calendar, and now you are counting down to the day of departure. What can you expect when you get there?
If you are flying into Beef Island Airport or taking one of the many ferries from St. Thomas, you will be transferred to TMM headquarters or your hotel, depending on your preference.
Below is just one of many ways of seeing BVI, not the only way! Most people do the islands in a counter-clockwise manner, but you can see the islands in any order you please. If you are staying more than 7 days, there are more islands in BVI than are listed in the itinerary below, so stop and enjoy them! You can see most of the islands of BVI in the map at the bottom.

  • Day One: Setting off from the TMM docks, head for Norman Island. This neat island has the caves that inspired the novel Treasure Island, and the William Thornton, a floating bar and restaurant, located in the Bight.
  • Day Two: Sail to Salt Island to snorkel or dive the wreck of the Rhone. Later sail over to Cooper Island, pick up a mooring in Manchioneel Bay and have a great dinner at the Cooper Island Beach Club.
  • Day Three: Head for the Baths on the south side of Virgin Gorda for a fun day of snorkeling amongst the coral encrusted giant boulders. Later you can pick up supplies at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, and continue on into the North Sound for a mooring, where there are lots of bars, restaurants, and night life.
  • Day Four: Make an early day of it and head to Anegada, 13 miles north of Virgin Gorda. In winter months it would probably be a close haul; in summer a beam reach. Either way, it is an adventurous way to spend the day, and at its end you can sit at the Anegada Reef Hotel and dine on lobster.
  • Day Five: Take your pick between Trellis Bay or Marina Cay. Trellis Bay offers The Last Resort restaurant, smooth sheltered anchorages, and drinks at sunset. Marina Cay offers the Sunset Bar, smooth sheltered anchorages, and drinks at sunset. Life is full of difficult decisions.
  • Day Six: Sail around the north side of Tortola to Jost Van Dyke. Arrive early, anchor in, then go snorkeling. Walk over to Rudy's Mariner Inn for fresh seafood, and follow it up with drinks and live music from Foxy at Foxy's Bar.
  • Day Seven: Sail around Tortola to Green Cay for more beautiful snorkeling, following by a relaxing time at Smuggler's Cove basking in the sun. Toward the end of the day go to Soper's Hole Wharf for reprovisioning and calling your job to tell them you are taking another week of vacation. Visit Pusser's Landing while there for a bit of history. Settle down for a night of rest to get ready for the long depressing flight home the next day while infected by DIF.
While not to scale, the map below can be used as a planning tool for what islands to visit. Please do not use it as a navigational aid, you are liable to run into something!

A useful site for checking weather is Wunderground.com. Although they have a tad too much advertising, they seem to do a good job of forecasting the weather, and they have a neat sticker for the website, as seen below. You can check the daily for conditions. You can also click on "Detailed Forecast" to get the forecasted weather conditions for the next few days.
